Compensation: $95,000 – $135,000 annually (commensurate with experience)
Location: Remote with nationwide deployment as needed, including Tribal Lands

Position Overview
Service Specialists is recruiting a Health & Safety Officer (HSO) / Industrial Hygienist to support a longterm federal contract dedicated to protecting clean water and safe drinking water for communities across the United States and Tribal Lands. This role is critical to ensuring the health and safety of personnel, contractors, and stakeholders during water emergency response and infrastructure restoration activities. The HSO will provide industrial hygiene and occupational safety leadership, identifying, evaluating, and controlling potential health hazards in dynamic and often highrisk response environments. This position is ideal for safety professionals who want to apply their expertise to missiondriven work with national impact, while benefiting from long-term program stability.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the Health & Safety Officer for water emergency response operations
- Provide industrial hygiene and occupational health expertise during response and recovery activities
- Identify, evaluate, and control occupational health and safety hazards, including:
- Chemical, biological, and physical hazards
- Confined spaces and construction-related risks
- Environmental and site-specific hazards
- Develop, review, and implement site-specific Health and Safety Plans (HASPs)
- Conduct exposure assessments, air monitoring, and hazard evaluations
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local health and safety regulations
- Advise project leadership on risk mitigation and protective measures
- Support training and briefings for response personnel and contractors
- Coordinate with federal agencies, response teams, and site leadership to maintain a safe working environment
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience (One of the following paths is required):
Option 1 – Master’s Degree
- Master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Sciences, Health, Management, or a closely related field
- Minimum of 4 years of professional industrial hygiene or occupational health and safety experience
- Experience must include:
- Identification, evaluation, and control of occupational health hazards
- Hands-on industrial hygiene or safety field activities
Option 2 – Bachelor’s Degree Substitution
- Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Sciences, Health, Management, or a closely related field
- Minimum of 6 years of professional experience as described above
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting emergency response, disaster recovery, or infrastructure restoration
- Familiarity with federal safety regulations (OSHA, EPA, NIOSH)
- Experience developing and implementing Health and Safety Plans in field environments
- Professional certifications such as CIH, CSP, or CHMM (preferred, not required)
- Experience working with federal agencies, government contractors, or Tribal entities
