Job Description

Vice President of Public Policy
Mississippi | $80,000–$100,000

Service Specialists recruiting agency is seeking a Vice President of Public Policy for a highly respected, mission- driven organization focused on advancing meaningful policy solutions that create greater opportunity for Mississippians. This is a senior level opportunity for a strategic, relationship-driven public policy professional who understands how ideas become policy—and how relationships, research, communication, and coalition building come together to create lasting change. The position offers flexibility to be based anywhere in Mississippi; however, regular travel to the Jackson area and a strong presence at the Mississippi State Capitol, particularly during the legislative session, will be essential.

In This Role

  • Lead the development and execution of the organization’s public policy strategy.
  • Identify, research, evaluate, and advance policy solutions addressing important issues facing Mississippi.
  • Develop and maintain trusted relationships with legislators, statewide elected officials, policymakers, community leaders, and other key stakeholders.
  • Maintain an active presence at the Mississippi State Capitol and serve as a credible, knowledgeable representative of the organization.
  • Monitor legislative activity and help determine where and how the organization can most effectively influence policy outcomes.
  • Review, analyze, and contribute to proposed legislation and policy language.
  • Lead government affairs efforts and coordinate with external lobbying resources as appropriate.
  • Build coalitions and strategic partnerships around shared policy priorities.
  • Represent the organization through meetings, public speaking, media opportunities, written commentary, and other external communications.
  • Work closely with executive leadership to ensure policy priorities remain aligned with the organization’s broader mission and strategic objectives.
  • Adjust strategies and tactics in real time as legislative and political environments evolve.

About you

We are looking for someone who combines policy expertise with exceptional relationship-building ability. You understand that meaningful policy change requires more than knowing legislation—it requires credibility, trust, diplomacy, persistence, and the ability to bring people together.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Significant professional experience in public policy, government affairs, legislative affairs, advocacy, or a closely related field.
  • A strong understanding of the legislative and policymaking process.
  • Existing relationships within Mississippi government, public policy, business, or civic leadership strongly preferred.
  • The ability to develop productive relationships across a wide variety of stakeholders and perspectives.
  • Strong philosophical alignment with an organization focused on expanding opportunity, reducing unnecessary barriers, strengthening education and workforce outcomes, and advancing effective public safety policy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The confidence and professionalism to interact effectively with legislators, elected officials, media, donors, organizational leaders, and community stakeholders.
  • Strong strategic judgment with the ability to balance long-term objectives with rapidly changing circumstances.
  • An entrepreneurial, solutions-oriented mindset.
  • The ability to operate independently while collaborating closely with a mission-driven team.

This role could be particularly compelling for an experienced government affairs professional, legislative staff leader, public policy executive, association leader, advocacy professional, attorney with significant legislative experience, or private-sector government relations professional ready to have a meaningful impact on Mississippi’s future.

For purposes of confidentiality, you can apply by emailing sfields@servicespecialistltd.com.
