Chief Underwriting Officer
Seeking a seasoned Chief Underwriting Officer for a fastgrowing, independent insurance brokerage. The CUO will play a pivotal role in shaping underwriting strategy, optimizing risk selection, and strengthening carrier relationships to drive long-term, profitable growth.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement underwriting strategy, risk appetite, and pricing guidelines across all lines of business.
- Ensure compliance with underwriting authority and carrier agreements.
- Establish risk selection criteria for a variety of industries and client types.
- Lead negotiations of delegated underwriting authority with carrier partners.
- Review and approve high-value or complex submissions escalated by underwriting staff.
- Analyze underwriting performance and loss ratios to adjust guidelines and maintain profitability.
- Collaborate with executive leadership, sales, and service teams to ensure underwriting aligns with business development and client retention goals.
- Lead, mentor, and scale a high-performing underwriting team.
- Stay ahead of market trends and leverage data and technology to drive process improvements and innovation.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
- 10+ years of commercial underwriting experience, including 5+ years in a senior leadership or executive role.
- Strong understanding of property & casualty insurance and underwriting best practices.
- Experience negotiating and managing carrier relationships and delegated authority agreements.
- Strategic thinker with proven ability to scale underwriting operations in a growth environment.
- Strong analytical and communication skills with a collaborative leadership style.
- Bachelor’s degree required; CPCU or other relevant designations preferred.
Additional Details:
- Salary $150k-$170k
- This role is based in Madison, Mississippi, but remote flexibility is available for the right candidate.
